automatic entry to Norfolk Island. All other visitors must obtain a
Visitor's Permit, available from the Norfolk Island Immigration Office
prior to arrival. Australian Citizens can also use a Certificate of
Identification obtainable from the Post Office. |

Summer temperatures (December-March) average about 75F (25C) and
winter temperatures (June-September) average about 65F (18C). Yearly
rainfall is approximately 50 inches (1200mm), most of which falls in
the winter. |

| System : Norfolk Island became a
Territory under the authority of the Commonwealth of Australia in
1914. It is administered under the Norfolk Island Act 1979 which
provides the basis of the Territory's legislative, administrative and
judicial systems. Wide powers are exercised by a nine-member
Legislative Assembly, elected for a 3 year term. The Norfolk Island
Government raises revenue under its own system of laws from which it
funds a range of Federal, State and local government-type services.
Major revenue sources are customs duty, liquor sales, financial
institutions levy, departure fees, and charges for government services
such as lighterage, telecommunications and electricity. Australian
income tax is not payable on income derived from within the Territory. |
