Gibraltar

Surface : 6.5 sq km (2.5 sq miles)..... Gibraltar is a large promontory of jurassic limestone, situated in the western entrance to the Mediterranean. The 5km-long (3 mile) rock contains 143 caves, over 48km (30 miles) of road and miles of tunnels. An internal self-governing British Crown Colony, Gibraltar has given its name to the Bay and the Straits which it overlooks.
Population : 27,025 (1998).

Climate: The climate of Gibraltar is temperate. During the winter months the prevailing wind is from the west often north-west and occasionally south-west. Snow or frost is extremely rare. The mean minimum and maximum temperatures during this period are 13oC and 18oC respectively. The prevailing wind in the summer is from the east. A warm breeze laden with moisture, known as the 'Levanter', strikes the eastern face of the Rock, condenses in the sky above it and causes a cold pall to hang over the city and bay. During this period the climate is humid. The mean minimum and maximum temperatures in the summer are 13oC and 30oC respectively.

System : Gibraltar is a United Kingdom Overseas Territory. Gibraltar has a very considerable measure of devolved government. The Gibraltar Constitution Order 1969 formalised the devolution to local Ministers of responsibility for a wide range of "defined domestic matters". The Governor, the personal representative of HM The Queen, has direct responsibility for all matters not specifically allocated to local Ministers: principally defence, external affairs, internal security (including the Royal Gibraltar Police) and financial stability.
Languages: Gibraltar is a bilingual community.  English is the main language but Spanish is widely spoken by most of the Population.
