Surface : 338,000 sq. km (130,500 sq. miles)...Finland is known as the 'land of the thousand lakes', but in fact there are a total of 187,888 lakes. The lakes are a veritable maze with their profusion of bays, headlands and islands.

Climate: cold temperate; potentially subarctic, but comparatively mild because of moderating   influence of the North Atlantic Current, Baltic Sea,  and more than 60,000 lakes
Electricity: The electric current in Finland is 220 V (230 V), 50 Hz.
Passport: Citizens of Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Norway do not need a passport, visa or residence permit to enter and reside Finland. Finland also accepts in place of a passport valid identity cards issued to their citizens by the officials of all EU countries (except Greece), Liechtenstein, San Marino and Switzerland. All other nationalities require a valid passport.....Visas: Most western nationals, including Americans, citizens of EU countries, Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders, Malaysians, Singaporeans and most South Americans do not need a visa..... NOTE: Travellers planning a trip across the border to Russia must have a visa. It is advisable to get it in the traveller's country of origin, because it takes at least eight weekdays to obtain a visa in Helsinki.

Languages : Finland is officially bilingual: Finnish, a Finno-Ugric language, is spoken by 92.74%, and Swedish by 5.71%. About 1700 people in Lapland speak Lappish (Sami).
Religions : 86 % of Finns are Lutherans, 1 % Orthodox, and 10 % unaffiliated.
