Surface : 83.850 Kmq.....The western part of the country is mountainous; valley bottoms have elevations between 500 and 800 m, peaks range from 2,500 to more than 3,700 m; villages lie anywhere up to the 1,800 m line. In eastern Austria, a central line of 1.800 m to 2,500 m mountains is paralleled by lower hills on the north and south sides; the lowlands of the Danube Valley and extreme eastern Austria are on the 180 m to 250 m foot level

Climate: Summer sightseeing and winter sports make Austria a year-round destination. The summer high season is in July and August, when crowds will be bigger and prices higher. It can be uncomfortably hot in the cities over summer and many famous institutions close down. Consequently, June and September are also busy months. During winter you'll find things less crowded in the cities and the hotel prices lower (except over Christmas and Easter). Winter sports are in full swing from mid-December to late March with the high season over Christmas, New Year and February. Alpine resorts are very quiet from late April to late May and in November. Spring in the Alps is in June, when the Alpine flowers start coating the mountains with colour.
Visas: EU, US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand citizens do not require visas for stays of up to three months. Nationals of African and Arabic countries generally require a visa - also valid for up to three months.... PASSPORTS: Valid passports required by all except for:  Nationals of EU countries and nationals of Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco and Switzerland who may enter with a valid national ID card.
Electricity: Austria uses 220-volt AC current at 50 cycles/second. Some hotels stock adapter plugs but not power converters. Electric appliances such as tape recorders, hair dryers or electric shavers can be used without risk of damage only if they are designed for 220 Volt AC - 50 Hz.

System : Austria is a federal republic with bicameral legislature: the 183-member National Council is elected for four years; the 64 members of Federal Council do not have fixed terms. The President, elected for a 6 - year term, is head of state. Executive power is held by the Chancellor, normally the leader of the largest party in parliament, who leads a cabinet of ministers
