| Surface: Tobago lies 21 miles
(33km) north-east of Trinidad. Unlike Trinidad, Tobago is a coral island with complex reef
systems. Roughly oval in shape, it is 16 miles long and seven miles wide, with a central
spine of forested mountains rising to 1,800 feet (549m). The south-west is much flatter;
this is where the island's tourism development is centred...... Trinidad's Northern Range
- a distant extension of the Andes - is covered by rain forest and runs in a spine along
the north coast, reaching a high point of 3,085 ft. (940 metres). There is a flat central
plain with savannahs, rivers and swamps. |
| Population : 1.297.000 inhabitants |
| Climate: The climate is tropical: warm all year and pleasantly cool at
night. The average daytime temperature is 29°C (83°F). The dry season runs
(theoretically) from January to May, and the wet season from June to December. The wet
season does not mean monsoons: your day at the beach, especially on the north coast, may
be interrupted by short, heavy showers, but not drowned by them. |
| Visas: For immigration purposes, ALL visitors to the islands require a valid PASSPORT or
other travel document. Visas are not required of visitors from the United States, Canada,
the UK and most European countries. However, visitors from Australia, Papua New Guinea,
Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, Mexico, Cuba, Nigeria and several other nations should obtain
a visa before travelling to the islands. |
| Electricity: 115 volts/230 volts (+/- 6%); 60hz |

| System : Parliamentary Republic .....Trinidad
and Tobago follows the Westminster model of government it inherited from Britain. General
elections are held at least every 5 years (the next is due this year). Legislative power
lies with the House of Representatives with 36 elected members, and the Senate with 31
members. Executive power lies with the Prime Minister and his Cabinet. Trinidad and Tobago
gained independence in 1962 and became a republic in 1976; it is a member of the British
