and tropical climate tempered by trade winds throughout most of the
year. The driest period is from January to April and there is
increased rainfall in summer and towards the end of the year. The average annual rainfall is about 125cm (50
inches) to 200cm (80 inches) with a wetter season from May to October.
Like the other Leeward Islands, St Kitts lies in the track of violent
tropical hurricanes which are most likely to develop between August

head of state of the Federation of St Christopher and Nevis (the
islands’ formal title) is the British monarch, represented locally
by a Governor-General. Legislative power is vested in the
Governor-General and the National Assembly, which has 11 members
elected directly by universal suffrage for a five-year term and three
appointed members. Nevis Island also has a separate legislature that,
subject to certain conditions written into the constitution, may
secede from the Government of the Federation. |
