Republic of Equatorial Guinea was a territory of Portugal from 1471 to 1778. It later
became Spanish Guinea, and then received its independence from Spain on October 12, 1968. A new constitution, approved in a 1991 referendum, allows for the introduction of
multi-party politics and elected presidency (for 7 years) and legislature. There have been
no presidential elections as yet, but the first elections for the House of
Representatives, which serves a 5-year term, were held in 1993. |
