| Surface : Situated on the
Atlantic Coast at The Bulge of West Africa, The Gambia has an area of some 4,000 square
miles (10,360 square kilometers) extending eastward from the sea for some 300 miles (480
kilometers) along both banks of The River Gambia. Near the mouth of The River, the
country
is over 30 miles (48 kilometers)
wide but
further upriver
the width diminishes to 15 miles

| Climate: The climate is tropical with distinct dry and rainy
seasons. The dry season at the coast, coinciding with the cooler weather, runs from
mid-November to mid-May; the hot rainy season is June to October. The weather is hot and
humid inland, with mid-day temperatures up to 38°C (100°F) in March-June. The harmattan
blows from the Sahara in January-March, bringing dust and haze. |
| Visas: All nationals except those of Britain and Commonwealth
countries, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the
Netherlands, Norway, Spain and Sweden require visas. Usually issued for 30 days these can
be extended free of charge from the Immigration Office in Banjul. Obtain your visa from
your nearest Gambian Office or representative. Nationals from neighbouring countries
generally do not require a visa. If you are travelling overland through Africa visas can
be obtained from neighbouring countries.The Gambia has recently made provisions for those
travelling on last minute bookings, requiring visas. If you are unable to obtain a visa
prior to arriving you will be given a 24 hour visa stamps on arrival and you then have to
obtain a visa from the Immigration Office in Banjul. Please check this as Immigration
Rules and Regulations are subject to change. |
